Transfer of Canadian Registration

Transfer of Canadian Registration

If any changes are to occur regarding the ownership of the vessel, be that a sale, a transfer, or a shared deal, you will need to go through the corresponding administrative process. This, known as a transfer of Canadian registration, will make the process official and make sure the record reflects accurate information. Let’s go over some of the basics of this application.

When to Transfer Your Registration

Transferring your boat registration is not something that will only have to deal with when selling or passing on your vessel to someone else. Sure, that will definitely be a big part of the process and most likely one of the most common instances of it. However, it is also going to be relevant when you are altering the ownership in any way, shape, or form. This means, that if the boat has two owners and you wish to remove one, or the boat has one owner and you’re looking to add one, you will have to go through a transfer of Canadian registration. The process is relevant to both full and partial changes in ownership.

Who Can You Transfer it to?

It’s important to note that not anyone can register a vessel with Transport Canada. In fact, there are very specific guidelines when it comes to who can register as a vessel owner. These are fairly straightforward. In order for someone to be eligible for ownership of the vessel, even if it is shared, they have to be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian resident, or a corporation incorporated under the laws of Canada. If they are any of these, then they can be added to the registry of the vessel along with the current owner. Do remember, though, that even if a co-owner is a Canadian citizen, someone who doesn’t fulfill any of these requirements won’t be able to also register as an owner.

How to Apply for the Transfer

Applying for a transfer of Canadian registration is very straightforward. All you need to do is submit the corresponding application, which is not necessarily complicated. As part of this application, you will need to fill out a form with the identifying information for the prior and the new owners. Along with this, documents such as a bill of sale, as well as detailed manufacturing data about the vessel, will further solidify the claim and make the process valid in the eyes of Transport Canada. You can find the necessary form, along with instructions, right here on the registry tab of our menu. Our main goal is to make processes like this as easy as possible.
