It might be considered bad luck in maritime circles, but it’s actually pretty normal if you are looking into changing a boat’s name. In fact, it will only take a couple of forms to do so.
Changing a Boat’s Name
There are going to be different case scenarios in which you might be changing a boat’s name. For example, it could have been named after someone you no longer wish to think about or it could be that you wish you named it after someone in their honour. In fact, you don’t need to have a reason. You can change the name of your boat whenever you feel like it. It’s yours, after all. Don’t worry, though, because the process to apply for a name change is going to be fairly easy, but it will require some paperwork. As with any bureaucratic process, however, it can quickly get complicated if you don’t know what you’re doing, which is why we have a quick guide here for your convenience.
Requirements For Boat Names
There aren’t a lot of rules and guidelines regulating boat names with Transport Canada. In fact, you are practically free to name your boat whatever you want as long, of course, as it is unique. Because of this, they asked you to provide three different options for the boat name in case one of them is already taken when you first registered your boat. When the time comes to change the name, it’s always good to consult with the database to make sure that you are changing a boat’s name to one that isn’t already taken. You can do so by visiting the Transport Canada database and checking it before applying.
Submitting the Form For a Name Change
Once you have made sure that the name you are choosing is unique and hasn’t been taken yet, all you will need to do is submit the necessary form. All you need to do is head over to the registry tab on our menu and select the change of vessel name, which can also be used to change the hailing port if you need to do that as well. You can submit it through our platform for us to make sure that everything is good to go before it’s submitted to Transport Canada and properly processed. After this, it will only be a matter of time before your name change is properly reflected by official Transport Canada documentation.
Transport Canada Boating Documentation
Here at the National Vessel Registry Center, we are well aware that no one likes to go through extensive documentation and paperwork, which is why we’ve set off to make it all much easier for you. We have established our platform in order to provide everyone access to all the forms they might need in order to take care of their Transport Canada boat registration or pleasure craft license, as well as the corresponding documentation that might follow. Regardless of what you need to file with Transport Canada, all your vessel documentation needs can be met right here on our website. Additionally, you can feel free to reach out to our team should you have any doubts throughout the process.
