The boat name register submission is an important part of the overall vessel registration process with Transport Canada. Here’s what you need to know about this submission process.
Boat Name Register
If you come to Transport Canada to register your boat for the first time, you will be asked a few different things. You will have to, for example, provide some basic stats about the vessel that you’re registering, as well as information about the prospective owner of the boat. Among these things, you will also be asked to provide choices for a name for the boat. Let’s take a closer look at how this would work.
Filing For the Initial Boat Name
When you first register your boat with Transport Canada, one of the most important steps in the process is going to be picking the name of the boat. While this might seem trivial to some people or feel like a superfluous part of the process, the boat name register process isn’t just a key part of the whole thing, but it’s also a way for you to connect with it and make it your own. What you will need to do is submit three potential names as part of the registration process, which will be looked at by Transport Canada in order to determine whether or not they’re available for the boat. You will get back a report on these names that you submitted and, should they be approved, you will be able to settle on one of them for the name.
Changing the Name of the Boat
The name of the boat isn’t going to be set in stone going forward. Sure, it will be painted on the hull, but this isn’t going to be that permanent. If at some point you decide that the name no longer does it for you, you can always file the corresponding form in order to officially change it with Transport Canada. This process will be similar to the boat name register submission, in that you have to submit three names for consideration in case that your first choice isn’t available. Then, once Transport Canada has taken a look, you will be able to settle on one name and officially change it on the registration certificate. You can do this by selecting the change of name option on our menu.
