Do not let another summer pass you by with too much time spent indoors. In Canada, these warm months are precious, as they serve as a welcomed reprieve from the relentless winter. One of the best ways to take in the idyllic summer weather is to get out on a boat with your family and friends. If you are considering buying a boat, you are probably somewhat overwhelmed with the sheer volume of options available on the market. Whether you are shopping for a simple kayak, or a high-end fishing boat, you have likely noticed that there are a vast array of options available. Still, with a little bit of research, you can find the right vessel for you. Once you have finalized the deal and your boat is ready to leave the dock, you will first want to make sure that you have the correct boat registration forms onboard. Fortunately, by working with a private service such as ours at the National Vessel Registry Center, you can get the documents you need over the web.
For a lot of people, buying a boat is one of the most significant purchases they will make throughout the course of their lifetime. If you have looked around a bit, you have likely noticed that new boats tend to command a high price tag. Once you take ownership of your boat, you will also need to navigate docking fees and maintenance costs. Because vessels can be so pricey, many Canadians turn to the secondary market in order to net a great deal on a well-maintained, previously-owned vessel. There are a number of online marketplaces where you can browse for boats for sale in your area, and many sellers are willing to negotiate on the price. After you have successfully gone through this process, you will be eager to make waves, and registering your boat is likely the final hurdle you will need to clear in order to do so.
What Vessels Require Boat Registration Forms?
There are a couple of common ways in which boats are documented with Transport Canada. For most leisure vessels, a pleasure craft license (PCL) will suffice. PCLs are mandatory for any boat with an engine of 7.5 kW or more, but they are available to all who want them as they serve as a way to identify your vessel. For boats that plan to engage in commercial activity or travel internationally while flying the Canadian flag, a vessel registration is required. You will also need to register your boat with Transport Canada if it is financed with a bank loan.
To register your boat, you can fill out a Form 1 – Application for Vessel Registration, as well as a Form 3 – Statement of Qualification for Vessel Registration. You should also submit photographs of all four sides of your boat and a tonnage measurement to Transport Canada.
